Palo Alto Art Center, CA, Bruce Metcalf Miniatures

"The Miniature Worlds of Bruce Metcalf"

The Palo Alto Art Center in Palo Alto, California, currently features an appealing exhibition by leading art jeweler, Bruce Metcalf. “The Miniature Worlds of Bruce Metcalf” will run through late December 2008. In this first major exhibition of the artist’s work, diminutive looms large. Metcalf’s fanciful pieces examine social, political and moral issues.

Of his work in miniatures, Metcalf has said, "the miniature can only be entered through an act of imaginative projection. Looking at small objects, viewers will get very close and the object will fill their field of vision. There's no scale in the imagination, and very small things can become psychologically large." Objects and figures cast in silver or carved in wood, “ponder Metcalf's overarching theme - the human condition…” (Palo Alto Art Center).

Following its stay in Palo Alto, the exhibition will travel through 2011, to the Mint Museum of Craft+Design (Charlotte, NC); Bellevue Arts Museum (Bellevue, WA); Fresno Art Museum (Fresno, CA); Fuller Craft Museum (Brockton, MA); Arkansas Arts Center (Little Rock); and Racine Art Museum (Racine, WI).
