Performance Art at Dallas Museum of Art

October 8, 2009–March 21, 2010

The Dallas Museum of Art celebrates the opening of its new Performing Arts Center with Performance/Art, an exhibition of the work of six international and American artists who have used the forms and ideas surrounding theater, opera, and performance as starting points for an exciting body of paintings, sculpture, films, and installations.

The exhibition includes British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare’s film Un Ballo in Maschera, based on the Giuseppe Verdi opera; Finnish artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila’s evocation of an ill-at-ease mind, the 3-screen film work Talo/The House; an installation work by Dallas-based artists Frances Bagley and Tom Orr based on sets and costumes they designed for a 2006 Dallas Opera production of Verdi’s Nabucco; and Argentine artist Guillermo Kuitca’s paintings and drawings based on album covers and seating charts of major theaters and opera houses.
